Frequently Asked Questions
We can absolutely help with many Apple and Mac issues, especially when it comes to software. For most Mac desktops and laptops, we provide support for slow performance, operating system updates, pop-ups and malware, email problems, backup setup, and general troubleshooting. On certain models, we can also assist with hardware repairs, but that depends on the exact device and what’s going wrong.
If you share your model number and a brief description of the issue, we’ll let you know whether it’s something we can take care of in our Whitestown office or if it’s better handled directly by Apple.
**At this time, Tech This, LLC is not an authorized Apple warranty service center, so manufacturer warranty repairs must be done through Apple.
Yes, we can replace or upgrade the hard drive in most desktop and laptop computers. During your visit, we’ll first identify the type, size, and health of your current drive so we can recommend the best replacement—whether that’s a similar drive or a faster solid-state drive (SSD) to speed things up. Because hard drives come in many varieties, we order them as needed instead of keeping every option in stock, which helps ensure you get the right part for your system.
When we install the new drive, we can also assist with reinstalling your operating system and restoring your data if you choose. Your old hard drive can be securely recycled through us, so you don’t have to worry about disposing of it or leaving sensitive information behind.
Often, yes—but it depends on your specific computer and how it was designed. Some systems have easily upgradable memory (RAM), while others, especially very slim laptops and certain all-in-one devices, have memory that’s soldered to the motherboard and cannot be changed. As part of our diagnostics, we’ll check your current specifications, see what capacity and speed your system can support, and then present you with clear recommendations and upgrade options.
If an upgrade makes sense, we’ll order compatible memory for your device and handle the installation for you, since RAM is not something we keep in stock. A memory upgrade can be a great way to reduce freezing, speed up multitasking, and extend the life of a computer you already like.
Yes, we stand behind the work we do. All standard repairs performed by Tech This, LLC include a 30-day labor warranty, which means if the same issue reappears within 30 days under normal use, we will take another look at it at no additional labor cost. Parts warranty is set by the manufacturer of the component and typically ranges from about 90 days up to one year, depending on the part. We’ll let you know the specifics for any parts we order on your behalf so you understand what’s covered and for how long.
Because labor reflects the time, troubleshooting, and expertise involved, there are no refunds on labor charges once that work has been completed.
Absolutely—we help with new computer setups all the time. You’re welcome to leave the computer in the box until we arrive; we’ll handle unboxing, connecting it, and walking through the initial setup screens with you. A typical setup can include creating user accounts, applying critical updates, installing your preferred web browser and basic software, connecting printers or other devices, and making sure you can access email and the internet. If you’re coming from an older computer, we can also discuss options for transferring files, documents, and photos so you’re not starting from scratch.
Our goal is to leave you with a new system that feels ready to use—not something you have to struggle through on your own.
Yes, that’s exactly what we’re here for!
Many customers come to us simply knowing that “something’s not right” without being able to pinpoint the cause. During diagnostics, we’ll ask a few questions about what you were doing when the issue occurred, how often it happens, and whether you’ve seen any error messages or unusual behavior. If possible, screenshots or photos of error messages are very helpful, but they’re not required.
From there, we’ll run tests, narrow down the problem, and explain your options in plain language so you can decide how you’d like to move forward.
We can provide software support for Microsoft Surface devices, but there are limitations when it comes to hardware. For most Surface models, we can help with performance issues, system updates, email problems, software errors, and general troubleshooting.
However, due to how many Surface devices are built and sealed, we are not currently able to perform hardware repairs such as screen replacements or internal component work. If your issue appears to be hardware-related, we can still help you confirm that and then point you toward the best next step, which may include Microsoft support or a specialized service center.
We’re happy to take a look at older computers and see what’s possible. In many cases, a tune-up, memory upgrade, or drive replacement can breathe new life into an aging system and buy you more time before you need to replace it. That said, there are situations where parts are no longer available or where the cost of repair would exceed the value of the machine, especially if it’s more than several years old or can’t run current, secure operating systems.
After diagnostics, we’ll explain what we found, what it would cost to repair, and whether we think your money is better spent investing in a newer computer. If replacement is the better option, we can also assist with selecting a new system and getting it set up.
A tune-up is best when the computer is still working, but just feels slow or sluggish. Typical tune-up situations include long startup and shutdown times, programs taking a while to open, lots of temporary files, or a system that hasn’t been cleaned up in a while but isn’t showing error messages or blue screens. Troubleshooting is the better option when you’re experiencing specific errors, random restarts, blue screens, freezing, or crashes while trying to perform normal tasks.
In troubleshooting, we focus on diagnosing the root cause of the problem and then recommending a repair plan. If you’re unsure which to choose when booking, let us know what you’re seeing and we’ll guide you toward the right option.
If you choose not to move forward with a repair after diagnostics, there are no additional costs beyond the diagnostic fee you’ve already paid. You’ll still receive our findings and recommendations so you understand what’s going on and what it would take to fix the issue. We generally recommend addressing serious problems promptly to prevent further damage or data loss, but we understand that sometimes repairing an older system just isn’t the right financial choice.
If the computer is not fixable or you decide not to invest in repairs, we can help with secure recycling at no extra charge, transferring your data to an external device, or assisting you with selecting and setting up a new computer. You’re also welcome to take the device back as-is and decide later what you’d like to do.
